Hello Ladies, just thought I'd pass on a catalog with a good selection of clothing that's more modest and comfortable than the blecchy stuff in the malls. All the jackets in malls are short-waisted (me no like!) and all the tops are skimpy. Yesterday, the Travel Smith catalog showed up in my mailbox, and they had plenty of long sweaters, tops and jackets. Check out this very cool linen riding jacket. Also longer skirts and dresses, and bathing suits with matching pareos and skirts. I haven't ordered from them yet, so I can't vouch for quality, but it looks to be well-made clothing. As the name indicates, these clothes are designed for travel, so they are easy to care for and dry quickly.
We last compared notes on sources for modest clothing here. Thought that with spring here (yayy!!) we could update that. Have people found other sources for good quality, reasonably priced clothing that leaves something to the imagination?
Mary,
Thank you for posting this link! I never thought to search for this company online. I found a Travelsmiths dress (a black "Indispensible" dress) in a thrift store for $4 a few years ago. It's one of my favorite pieces of clothing--the skirt line is flattering, the length (midcalf) is perfect, and it wears like iron, looking brand-new after several years.
It's perfect travel wear, too. I travel with the dress all the time, and it doesn't wrinkle in a suitcase. I happened to bring it to a professional conference in Chicago during a 100-degree heat wave, and it was perfect. I carried a long-sleeve cardigan with me for walking around inside air-conditioned hotels among potential employers.

Almost any store can yield modest clothing if you take the time to look. For example, Old Navy is selling a-line, below knee skirts. I also got some wonderful fitted tees there. Not too tight, and with actual sleeves. They also carry summer sweaters that work well over tank tops, which have wider straps than most.

You simply can't beat LandsEnd for modest bathing suits.

LandsEnd and L.L. Bean also offer quality modest clothing... I frequently shop their overstocks, they've got some great deals there.

I just have to share -- the other day I was walking down the street in New York in this peasant dress from Newport News (http://www.newport-news.com/shop/Product.asp?catid=1891&gpcatID=1875&pacatID=1878&subcatID=&superstyleID=221107&mainstyleid=280890&prodnum=5778959"), in a color no longer on the website, "paprika." So, a modest, ankle-length dress, in a rather conspicuous color.
I was talking on my cell with my mother when a young man walking the other way past me on the street said "You look very nice, ma'am." I'm not really old enough to get "ma'am" very often, so I turned and looked -- and saw a couple of Mormon missionaries with the white shirts, backpacks, etc.
I laughed and told my mom "I just got complimented by Mormons!" She said "I'll bet they have a policy of complimenting modestly-dressed women as part of their efforts to convert people." "You may be right," I said.
I spent the rest of the day telling people "I got complimented by Mormons!" (In New York, that's a little unusual).

My favorite is Hanna Andersson. They do have some less modest stuff, but what they do have is great.

I've never heard of a policy to compliment modestly dressed women, but I bet those missionaries were glad to not have to avert their eyes from the typical warm weather fashions. Way to go, Penelope (now you've been complimented by another Mormon).
As an LDS (Mormon) woman I can tell you that we try to take modesty in dress and action seriously. In fact at age twelve each child is given a booklet dealing with modesty, sexual purity, media, etc.
The Dress and Appearance section begins this way:" “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? … The temple of God is holy, which temple ye are” (1 Corinthians 3:16–17).
Your body is God’s sacred creation. Respect it as a gift from God, and do not defile it in any way. Through your dress and appearance, you can show the Lord that you know how precious your body is. You can show that you are a disciple of Jesus Christ."
You can find the whole pamphlet here
